Fire Watch Pricing in Southern California
What drives the rate, why there is no honest flat hourly price, and how to compare fire watch quotes. From a California PPO-9557 licensed patrol operator.
Fire Watch Is Quoted Per Post, Not at a Universal Hourly Rate
Any vendor handing you a flat fire watch rate before walking the site or reading the impairment notice is pricing either the easiest scenario or the hardest. Neither matches your job.
Fire watch is a regulated service. The Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), the local fire marshal or building official who issued the impairment notice or hot work permit, sets the scope. That scope dictates how many officers are required, how often rounds must be documented, the response window the officer is held to, and how the documentation must be formatted. Two jobs on the same block can carry very different scopes.
Distance from our Oxnard base also affects drive time, fuel, and supervisor visit frequency. A short notice 2 a.m. deployment in Long Beach carries different logistics than a planned Monday morning post in Ventura. Hours per day, single-shift versus multi-shift, and weekend or holiday differentials all move the number further.
That is why a serious fire watch operator quotes per post. Anyone who quotes you a one-size hourly number without asking about AHJ, property type, duration, response window, and armed versus unarmed is selling you a guess.
What Moves a Fire Watch Quote Up or Down
Know these in advance and we return a number on the first call instead of three rounds of back and forth.
Hours Per Day and Coverage Pattern
A 12-hour overnight post prices differently than a 24/7 multi-shift assignment needing three officers in rotation plus a supervisor.
Distance From Our Oxnard Base
Ventura County posts are closest to dispatch. Los Angeles and Orange County jobs carry additional drive time for officer rotation and supervisor visits.
Armed vs Unarmed Requirement
Most fire watch posts are unarmed: the role is hazard recognition, not response to violence. When the AHJ or property requires armed coverage, the rate moves up because the credential, insurance, and training cost more.
AHJ Documentation Burden
Some jurisdictions accept a simple round log. Others require photo-tagged rounds, GPS timestamps, and a specific submission cadence. The heavier the spec, the more officer time goes to documenting versus walking.
Weekend, Holiday, and Multi-Shift Differentials
Saturday, Sunday, and holiday hours carry a labor differential. Coverage crossing midnight carries shift-change overhead. These should be line items, not invoice surprises.
Response Time SLA
If the AHJ or your insurance carrier requires an officer on site within a defined window, that response capability has to be reflected in staffing. A two-hour deploy quote is different from a same-day deploy quote.
How Our $31/hr Unarmed Baseline Relates to Fire Watch
We publish our unarmed standing patrol rate openly. Fire watch sits on top of it, never below.
Americal Patrol's published unarmed baseline is $31/hr. That covers a standard unarmed officer on a routine post in a typical service area on a normal contracted schedule. It is the floor for our unarmed work.
Fire watch is not a routine post. It sits at or above the baseline depending on which variables above apply. A planned single-shift unarmed fire watch in Oxnard during a sprinkler inspection looks closer to the floor. An armed multi-shift Los Angeles construction post with photo-tagged rounds on a 2-hour AHJ cadence sits well above it.
Be skeptical of any operator quoting a fire watch rate below our published unarmed baseline. Underlying California labor costs do not vary by vendor. If the rate is meaningfully lower, something is being skipped: insurance, supervision, documentation, training, or the officer's wage. Each skip lands back on you as a denied claim, a failed AHJ inspection, or a guard who walks off mid-shift.
Red Flags When Comparing Fire Watch Quotes
Watch for these patterns when comparing quotes. They all signal a number that will grow on the invoice.
Low Hourly Rate, No Shift Differentials
A single low number with no weekend, holiday, or overnight breakdown means those differentials will appear later as invoice surprises. Real quotes show them as line items.
No Supervision Charge Visible
Fire watch requires periodic supervisor visits. If the quote has zero supervisor cost, either supervision is bundled and unstated, or it is not happening.
Documentation Not Included
If the quote does not name what documentation is produced and in what format, you are buying a body in a chair. Make sure documentation is in writing.
Unclear AHJ Format Capability
Ask if the vendor has submitted to your AHJ before and in what format. A vague answer means documentation may be rejected by the fire marshal, extending the impairment and your bill.
Hidden Insurance or Liability Surcharge
General liability and workers' comp should be baked into the rate. If insurance shows up as a later add-on, that is a recovery surcharge for thin margins on the headline number.
License Number Missing or Refused
Every legitimate California patrol vendor will put their PPO number on the quote without being asked. Ours is PPO-9557. If a vendor will not give you theirs, walk.
What You Actually Pay For in a Fire Watch Quote
Five components, every time. If any of them are missing from a quote you are looking at, ask why.
- The officer. BSIS-licensed, fire-watch trained, on post the full shift window with documented rounds.
- The supervisor. Periodic site visits to verify rounds and documentation.
- The documentation. Daily branded incident reports, stamped round logs, photo-tagged events, AHJ-ready.
- The response capability. 24/7 dispatch, relief officers for shift changes, immediate escalation to fire department or 911.
- Insurance, license, AHJ format. General liability, workers' comp, our CA PPO-9557 credential, documentation matching your AHJ's expected format.
Our Process for Issuing a Fire Watch Quote
We do not need a week. We need 15 minutes on the phone and, if the site is local, a short walk-through.
15-Minute Intake Call
We ask the variables that drive the quote: AHJ, property type, hours, days, armed or unarmed, response window, documentation cadence. Most clients answer everything in under 15 minutes.
Walk-Through if Local
For Ventura County and close-in Los Angeles County posts, we walk the site same day or next morning. We see access points, the round path, and documentation gotchas before they become a problem.
Written Quote Same Business Day
After the call (and walk-through if local), you get a written quote that day with the per-post rate, the variables behind it, the documentation included, and our PPO-9557 license printed on the document.
What Documentation Is Included in Every Quote
Documentation is not an upsell. It is the deliverable.
Every fire watch post we run produces an AHJ-ready record. The baseline package, included in every quote, covers three things: a daily branded incident report on Americal Patrol letterhead summarizing the shift, stamped round logs showing the time and location of every patrol pass, and photo-tagged events for anything that triggered a closer look.
If your AHJ requires more, we layer it on and tell you the cost before the shift starts. We do not bill documentation as a surprise line item. Our PPO-9557 license standing depends on jobs that end with the AHJ signing off cleanly. Documentation is what makes that happen.
FAQ: Can you give me a flat hourly number over the phone before knowing the site?
No, and be careful of any operator who will. We can give you a realistic range in the first 15-minute call once we know armed or unarmed, rough hours per day, the location, and the AHJ. We will not commit to a billable rate before we know what we are pricing, because if the rate is wrong either we pull the officer or you get a surprise invoice. Both are worse than a 15-minute call. Our published unarmed baseline of $31/hr is the floor; fire watch sits at or above it depending on the variables above.
